After a few experiences of having projects that had coordination issues that were not directly due to our involvement unfortunately, I realized that never again would we ever do a building not in BIM because the opportunities for clashing and lack of coordination, they’re just too many in the traditional way.

…Whether I’m exporting an architectural model for them to coordinate or I’m importing their structural model to work with, it works perfectly both ways; and have had absolutely no coordination issues. In fact if anything, the clash detection capabilities of the software will point out to us if there’s any potential mistakes that we might not be seeing immediately. That’s a big value…

I think what Archicad does particularly well is it empowers a designer to deal with what they want to deal with at all stages of the process. So, if you’re only doing conceptual design, if it’s all about generating dozens of iterations, there’s a tool for that. If it’s about cranking out multiple modules, let’s say you’re doing a multi-family building and you want to be able to rapidly document dozens of different room layouts, there’s a tool for that. So, whether you’re in the design process or the documentation process, the tool was built in order to make that process efficient.

“The efficiency of these tools really helps our business. We’re able to do bigger projects as a smaller team. So that’s always a winning strategy when it comes to getting a young company off of the ground.”

The common challenge is going to be talent acquisition and training, so we put a lot of effort toward getting somebody who’s a talented designer, right, and the type of teammate that you want to be around. We put a lot of effort into how do we get that designer to be able to leverage this tool in a way where they can then contribute to our workflow.

“What we love about the ARCHICAD workflow is that it’s very open. When a certain design requires us to use software like Rhino, we can design it there. We’re not penalized. Then we can pull it right into our model. When we find furniture or a component on the sketch of 3D Warehouse that we want to use, we literally drag it into a system. When we have a consultant who is using another software suite, we export an IFC file. That measure of openness is certainly the business model that I want to align with.”

We can get a young designer productive in a matter of weeks, but it will take them several more months to build upon that knowledge. They’re going to still, from an early phase, be a contributing teammate, but they’re going to mature over a series of the next few months to where they’re really investing at a hundred percent. And so I would encourage folks who are new to this software package to be both aggressive in getting folks productive quickly, but also patient in that it will take time for those skillsets to mature.

I would say there are two distinct advantages to using Archicad as a designer. The first is that the flexibility it gives me allows me to be more inventive in the shapes and the forms and the geometries that are at the early, early stages of design. But the second is because it’s parametric, and because we’re building our own library, there’s a lifespan across multiple projects where I can reward myself by kind of leveraging the efficiency from past projects into new projects so the time that we spend is actually cut into less and less chunks of time as we do more and more work in it.

A few of our designers have been using Archicad a long time, and it is such a delightful experience to look over their shoulders and to see the fluidity with which they’re able to master this software and create what’s in their imagination. The speed is just remarkable.

It’s common that I’m asked about our use of Archicad as other firms are considering it. Of course, the most common reasons for using it are its flexibility and efficiency. The reason that I like to quote most often though, believe it or not, is the growing community.

The number one reason people use Revit is because there’s an assumption that that’s the industry standard. There’s the assumption that if you want to collaborate with others, you better get on board with that language. I think both of those assumptions are false. I think once you taste the flexibility and the speed of Archicad, there’s no going back.

That ability to be able to work in different parts of the model in a more fluid way is fantastic. As the documentation [phase] gets more intensive, we open it up to a larger group, and the teamwork functionality has been great.
