The team
Minnucci Associati

Minnucci Associati is an engineering company based in Rome, Anguillara Sabazia, and Milan, specialized in the use of OPEN BIM technologies. The practice was founded in 1990 as an engineering firm, and it became an engineering and architecture company in 2011, thanks to its experience in both design and construction. Today, it offers services to both public institutions and private companies, such as consulting, planning, design, construction and asset management, and sustainable building services. The team is made up of both engineers and architects, and offers services for each stage of a building’s lifecycle.

Each project in their portfolio has been fully managed by the team, from the concept to the top-tier construction of infrastructure, residential, industrial, urban buildings and beyond.

Moreover, their work has been awarded twice by buildingSMART International.

The future of architectural design is the digital twin, which allows us to build digital models of our reality, cultural heritage, history, and architecture. It allows us to manage and maintain the projects and to have them recognized and shared in the most accurate way possible.

Facility maintenance with 10,000+ elements

One of the most data-heavy projects the team worked on was in collaboration with the Italian railway network. To create a working process for the facility management of the 400,000 square meter Naples Central Station, they developed a twin model of the construction that included the 12,500 elements subject to maintenance.

Using Graphisoft’s BIMcloud, the team organized survey data and models into a single, catalogued database. Formalized this way in a BIM Execution Plan, the railway team was able to approve changes and request information remotely throughout the entire process. This system also allowed them to reincorporate individual files both in Archicad’s authoring model and later in IFC models. The complexity of the project was no small feat – ultimately, the project exceeded over 150 files with 10-15 collaborators working in parallel. The challenge ultimately earned the team and their collaborators, Engisis and IBN, a buildingSMART award for Operation & Maintenance using OPEN BIM Technology.

The objective was the creation of the Digital Twin of the 400,000 sqm Naples Central Station with over 12,500 elements subject to maintenance. The main challenge was the vast size of the model. Graphisoft BIMcloud came to our aid as we were able to divide the survey data and the resulting model into federated files, then re- merge later either within Archicad, or using the exported IFC models.

Partners in sustainable innovation

Together with Graphisoft and St. Gobain, Minnucci developed XY Living, a ‘Multi Comfort House’ project created with sustainability top of mind as part of the Nearly Zero Energy Building campaign. The construction system was based on a patented material by Saint Gobain: dry interlocking poplar wood blocks that can be manufactured rapidly and flexibly implemented in designs.

To realize the project, Saint Gobain worked closely with Minnucci and Graphisoft to design a complex model arranging the modular blocks quickly and accurately. The Parametric Library objects were then created in Archicad on this prototype. Walls, roofs, and attics were designed using tools developed on the model, allowing the team to perfect the finishes, layering and alternating arrangement of the blocks for an optimal result.

Historical Preservation
Rehabilitating Palazzo del Clementino

In order to preserve the historical Palazzo del Clementino with integrity and imagination, the team created a 3D digital twin model to explore different design and construction solutions. The recreated digital version of the project included a BIM model element table that broke down the various elements so they could be meticulously catalogued and filtered.

Data could be fed into an energy model imported into calculation software tools. The model also included multiple screens for each element, that displayed various types of degradation to monitor preservation demands over time.
