The 1997 Graphisoft Prize Student CAD Competition culminated with a jury and the first architectural webcast on June 18 at A/E/C Systems in Philadelphia. More than $30,000 of prizes were awarded including hardware configurations, donations, and software. This year’s competition, which drew entries from around the world, asked architecture students to use Archicad® and Apple’s QuickTime® VR to create architectural models from works of literature and culture such as Bartok’s “Bluebeard’s Castle” and Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities to Douglas Adams’ Restaurant at the End of the Universe. This competition was the fourth sponsored by Graphisoft and the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS).
In addition to the AIAS, this year’s Graphisoft Prize was co-sponsored by Apple Computer’s “Masters of Design,” Architectural Record Magazine, and The Architectural Review. Apple Computer’s “Masters of Design” donated more than $10,000 of computers to the prize winners.
Graphisoft and Design Architecture, the Electronic Journal of Architecture and Design, collaborated to deliver the first ever live webcast of an architectural jury from the show floor complete with live web cams, screen shots of the entries and a live chat with live audio feed of the entire selection process. Names and VRs of the winning entries can be seen on the Graphisoft web site at www.graphisoft.com and an archive of the jury will be available on the Design Architecture site at www.cornishproductions.com. Graphisoft will also publish a CD-ROM catalog of the winners and other selected entries this summer.
“This was the most successful live event we’ve ever done; we had over 2,000 people tuned in online. We’ve had tremendous response ever since with comments about the webcast and everyone is asking for more,” said Dan Cornish of Design Architecture.
The projects were judged by Robert Ivey, FAIA, Architectural Record; Barbara Hillier, AIA, The Hillier Group; Craig Spangler, AIA, Associate Principal, Ballinger; Katherine Slesser, Senior Editor of the Architectural Review; and Cassius Peeler, Vice-President of the AIAS.
The winning projects are:
- First Prize: Akos Ignac Ginder from the University of Belgrade, Yugoslovia. Project was Asgard from Norse Mythology and Marvel Comics. Award: Traveling fellowship or two + $2500 cash + Archicad software + a high-end Macintosh configuration.
- Second Prize: Jad Silvester and Todd Henderson from University of Tasmania. Project was Church of Reason from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, by A. Pirsig. Award: Traveling fellowship for two + $1000 cash + Archicad software + a mid-range Macintosh configuration.
- Third Prizes:
- Ivan Lopez and Sebastian Cerda from Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. Project was Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. Award: Traveling fellowship for two + $500 cash + Archicad software.
- Jorg Fichna and Raoul Tomada from the Westf;älische Wilhelms University at Münster in Germany. Project was Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams. Award: Traveling fellowship for two + $500 cash + Archicad software.
- Honorable Mentions:

Background about the competition
Graphisoft and the AIAS opened the competition to all students to demonstrate Archicad’s and Apple’s revolutionary computer-based visualization technology. Using Archicad as a design tool, and QuickTime® VR as a visualization tool, (Graphisoft’s Archicad is the first application with the ability to produce its own QuickTime® VR movies directly from the project file), competitors were invited to interpret works which have been destroyed or have never physically existed, but are nevertheless “real” in our culture. Through these projects, QuickTime® VR technology and Archicad were used in an unprecedented design process with a unique emphasis on realizing the architectural content of myths, legends, literary works and musical pieces while exploring the potential impact of technology on architectural design.
