Tektonn Architects is a growing practice with a focus on urban design, public buildings and urban public space, creating innovative architecture that respects the natural environment while simultaneously improving people’s lives.
Founded in Paris, Tektonn Architects established a permanent office in Chengdu in 2018. The name Tektonn originates from Tian and Tong which represent nature, and the artificial elements in nature.
Integration between architectural, interior and landscape design is key to Tektonn’s work. The practice is dedicated to BIM design from initial concept through to on-site delivery.

BIM design…can contribute to better conservation of societal resources, better control of the pace of future construction, and a better control of errors.

Archicad

From concept to construction

Tektonn uses Archicad throughout the entire design and construction process from initial concept exploration through to on-site construction. From team collaboration, through to presenting design results, exporting lightweight models and communicating with clients, Archicad and BIMx are the cornerstones of Tektonn’s working practice.
By enabling the team to work in a common data environment within the practice and with external engineers, Archicad saves time and reduces errors.
Archicad has brought a more logical approach to Tektonn’s thinking about architecture and has enabled the team to apply new learning about structures, materials and design.
By working in Archicad, designers see more issues exposed straight away; Archicad has enabled the team to shift from passively solving problems to actively solving them.

The project

A glistening lakeside design

Located in a park city on the shores of Xinglong Lake, The Tianfu Roadshow Center is a showcase project that reflects the culture of Chengdu. A center for cultural, artistic, and technological innovation, it serves as a launch pad for talent and new technologies.
The building’s complex design needed to meet the competing demands of respecting its urban parkland environment and creating a cultural landmark on the lakeside.
Approaching from the park side, the Roadshow Center is designed to blend into the landscape and includes a simple observation tower that allows visitors to walk to the top of the building.
From the lakeside, the striking building is more dynamic, giving the impression of a fish leaping out of the water.

Design

Creating a striking double curve

The complex curved façade of the Roadshow Center follows the topography and elevation differences of the site.
Tektonn designed the double-curved structure within Rhino, before hot-linking it with their design in Archicad. This two-way link allowed the team to undertake further editing within Archicad once the initial structure was created.
The side of the building facing the lake is very simple, with the large interior space connected to the outside through a transparent glass curtain wall.
Meanwhile, the exterior is covered with scale-like structures, adopting the same texture as the local rough stone. This allows the building to have a dazzling and dynamic feel, while simultaneously remaining subdued.

Collaborating with BIMx

With the help of BIMx, Tektonn was able to extend the use of Archicad to the Tianfu Roadshow Center project site. Tektonn exported the Archicad model to BIMx, enabling the construction team to access the lightweight model and Tektonn’s drawings via their phones or tablets.
As the curved design was so complicated, viewing the plans in 2D would have been very challenging. However, using BIMx, Tektonn was able to demonstrate the designs and ensure the site layout was correct from the start.
Using BIMx helped to save time and costs on-site; with everyone working in the same 3D space, the team was quickly able to solve any problems.
