The Team
Designing with the ‘Genius Loci’

Established by renowned architect and designer Matteo Thun in 1984, Matteo Thun & Partners has grown into a multi-disciplinary team with offices in Milan and Munich. The practice’s philosophy is to build with the ‘Genius Loci’ in mind, respecting the innate soul of each place.
Embracing the concept of conscious design, interdisciplinary teams create high-end hotels and residential complexes, humane healthcare, and inspirational workplaces for clients worldwide.
With this sustainable approach to architecture and interior design, the team is working on several unique hotels and residences, with Archicad the key to bringing each of these inspirational projects to life.

Design
Respecting history with contemporary design

Combining contemporary elegance within a historic setting, a new five-star hotel in Venice celebrates the legacy of its Murano glass factory location.
Part restoration, part new build, the Langham Hotel will welcome guests into the restored Casino Mocenigo, a sixteenth century building that houses frescoes from the Veronese School.
The historic building interiors were modeled in Archicad, while the in-built Curtain Wall and Railing tools enabled the team to model the internal partitions and coverings.
New buildings in the complex are clad with horizonal glass slats in tribute to the site’s past. With Archicad used from concept through to schematic design, parametric modeling for the glass façade ensured optimal positioning of the slats to improve their visual protection capacities.

The use of Archicad and BIMcloud allowed for an effective and rapid exchange of information in all the design phases.

OPEN BIM
BIM from design to realization

The Langham Hotel is Matteo Thun & Partners’ first 100% BIM project, with BIM methodology specified from schematic design through to realization.
Throughout the project, the team worked with multiple external consultants including the structural and MEP engineers, surveyors and BIM coordinators. Each of the different disciplinary models was uploaded to the common data envirnoment, where a federated model was created and BIM coordination carried out including model checking and clash detection.
The team used Archicad’s Library Part Maker, which allowed them to develop tailor made objects with different levels of detail. These were subsequently shared with external consultants, with the exchange optimized to provide only the information necessary for each professional field.

Collaboration
Real-time collaboration and communication

A new boutique hotel nestled on the shores of Bavaria’s Lake Chiemsee combines sustainable design and natural materials to offer guests a relaxing stay surrounded by stunning views of the lake and mountains.
Teams in Munich and Milan worked together on the same Archicad file hosted in BIMcloud. This enabled a seamless, real-time exchange of information throughout the design phases between the geographically dispersed teams.
Using the expression-based properties function in Archicad, the team set up automated translation from English into German and Italian to further speed up collaboration with external consultants.
Meanwhile, support and training from Graphisoft for both the German and Italian teams kept the project on track and ensured continuous and effective communication and collaboration throughout.

Learn the foundations of Teamwork in Archicad, and understand the benefits of this workflow for multidisciplinary projects in our self-paced online course, Teamwork in Archicad.  The course includes an overview of the collaboration techniques in Archicad and their strategic use.

The use of BIMcloud as a Service was fundamental, it made collaboration and internal workflows much more fluid.

Visualization
Interactive visualization for faster decisions

Regenerating a disused industrial area, the Falkensteiner Park Resort is a mixed use residential and hotel complex located on the shores of Lake Garda.
Archicad was a key tool in helping customers to understand the masterplan for the redevelopment. By mapping the geo-located 3D model, the architects were able to demonstrate how each of the apartments would sit in respect to the lake.
Moreover, Archicad’s sun study tool enabled the team to carefully visualize how the sun would fall on each of the apartments at different times of the day and year.
The ability to visualize the development in such an interactive way significantly sped up the decision-making process with the client and other stakeholders throughout the project.

We benefited from quickly comprehending the project and easier decision-making, which was a crucial issue.

Efficiency
Hotlinks for consistency and efficiency

Throughout the Falkensteiner project, the team interacted with external consultants and professionals using OPEN BIM tools and exchanged information via IFC.
Using BIM methodology, the team worked with external consultants to produce a BEM (BIM Energy Model) which was used to simulate and verify the environmental impact of the project as well as its geometric and dimensional complexity.
Each of the hotel and apartment buildings was modeled in Archicad with different parts of each building designed as individual modules. The repeatable elements of the standard hotel rooms and apartments were hotlinked into these files. In this case, changing a common element once means it is automatically updated across the whole Archicad model, vastly improving productivity and efficiency.
