The competition was co-sponsored by Kajima Corporation, YKK AP FACADE, Okinawa Digital Vision and GRAPHISOFT; technical sponsors were Atlas Industries Ltd. and Studio NAO. The two-round competition attracted 300 students from the two universities. The theme of the competition this year was a cultural center in Ho Chi Minh City on the border of the old “Chinatown.”

The first round was a classical design competition, without using Building Information Modeling (BIM). The top 20 teams received a 5-day Archicad training in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The students then had two weeks to refine their designs and create a BIM model with corresponding 2D and 3D. The use of Archicad Teamwork was also a part of the competition and the presentations were all presented using Graphisoft BIMx. “It was remarkable how quickly the students picked up Archicad and the level of modeling they achieved in this short period of time!” said Bence Kovacs, Vice President for GRAPHISOFT Asia.

The 10 best teams were invited to present their projects to the jury at Ho Chi Minh City Architectural University on June 19. The final evaluation of the projects was based both on the design and the BIM model; half of the points were awarded for the quality of the Archicad model and the other half for the quality of the design. The three members of the winning team won a trip to Singapore, while the second and the third place winners won internships with the sponsoring companies.

“Despite the more complex task, the results were even better than last year,” said Kazumi Yajima, General Manager, BIM Director, Kajima Corporation, who co-developed the idea of the competition with GRAPHISOFT. “I would like to congratulate all the teams for their remarkable efforts!”

“In just one year, this competition has attracted 3 times the number of students from the first year, as well as gaining additional sponsors,” Bence Kovacs said. “We’re very excited about the level of enthusiasm for BIM that we’re seeing in Vietnam’s top architectural universities,” he added.
