Tillberg Design reports dramatic increase in efficiency
Munich/Viken, Sweden – September 1, 1999
Tillberg Design, with offices in Viken, Sweden; London; and Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla., uses Graphisoft’s Archicad to create their renowned
cruise ship architecture and interiors. The massive vessels designed by
this 30-year-old company – including the Swedish-American Line’s
legendary Kungsholm, and SuperStar Leo, built by Meyers in 1998 – combine
luxury with functionality. Archicad assists them in ensuring technical
precision and harmony in their designs.
“The biggest transformation in our company’s history was the decision to
use CAD software for the design and construction of ships,” explains
Tillberg Design’s founder and CEO, Robert Tillberg. “Using Archicad, we
can easily modify existing designs without having to start over again and
correct each single piece, as was the case with hand drawings.
Consequently, our efficiency has increased enormously.”
Tillberg attracts clients from all over the world with its unique designs
of show lounges, cabins, lobbies, shops and casinos. From interior design
and decoration to ship exteriors, their impressive portfolio includes
work for cruise lines such as Star Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, P&O
Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Cunard Cruise Lines and American Hawaii.
Tillberg Design has more than 60 employees, and owns 40 Archicad licenses
running on the Mac OS. When looking for the best software solution for
their firm, the Swedish architects were impressed above all by Archicad’s
3D visualization and TeamWork capabilities.
“These days, it is impossible to design a ship on your own. A reliable
and highly efficient design team, together with cabin and stairway
specialists and, of course, a capable project leader, are needed,” says
Lennart Ekstedt, managing director of Tillberg Design. “And the team
members are not necessarily sitting together in the same office.”
With the increased collaboration between offices, file compatibility was a
major concern. The support of the latest DXF and DWG files (data exchange
and drawing formats) was crucial for Tillberg Design in choosing the right
CAD application. Archicad’s open API (Application Programming Interface)
also creates new opportunities for ship designers by allowing them to
develop funcionality for their special needs.
