Q&A with

For our next instalment of Archicad in Practice, we hear from Shaun Davey, Architect at PMR Architecture as he discusses some of the unique challenges for architects working in the residential space and how technology can help to address them.

What are the biggest challenges facing architects today?

Architects bring a number of invaluable skills to projects that are often invisible to the general public, in particular with the growth in popular TV programmes such as Grand Designs.

The increase in phone apps means that a homeowner can easily create their own plan on a phone. Some of them are well drawn, filled with furniture and all the home touches that make a plan appear attractive at first glance.

These include problem-solving, the knowledge and understanding to bring together the right specialists, and minimising stress for clients.

Firstly, architects have the ability to look ahead and spot any upcoming challenges before they stop the construction project in its tracks.

Secondly, architects have experience in bringing construction specialists together so that the project runs efficiently.

Thirdly, an experienced architect will smooth out any problems that arise and reduce the stress for clients.

How can technology help you to address these challenges?

It enables us to bring together plans, technical details, and renders in one digestible output.

It helps architects to tell the whole story of what we do, rather than just focusing on pretty pictures.

It gives us the opportunity to easily demonstrate all aspects of our work to customers, from initial sketches through to the completed building.

Much of what the public knows about architects is down to programmes such as Grand Designs which tailor their shows for entertainment rather than education.

With the help of social media, we can show our work through many more mediums and we should start to tell more of the full story behind our projects, rather than showing just the finished photos at the end.
