Konieczny’s Aatrial House Wins World Architectural News Award
The Aatrial House, designed in Archicad by Polish architect Robert Konieczny, has been named “House of the Year” by World Architecture News. The Aatrial House was designed by Konieczny, with the collaboration of Marlena Wolnik and Lukasz Prazuch, of KWK PROMES (www.kwkpromes.pl).
The building was inspired by transformations of a cube – a typical design theme of Polish buildings in the 1970’s. Besides its beauty, this building won for its innovation in the creation of a unique atrial spatial model of the house.
The Aatrial House is located in Opole, Poland, on a one-hectare site near a forest, and provides magnificent views from large glass facades. The Aatrial House – reversing the concept of the Roman atrial house – is closed to the inside atrium and opened to the surroundings.
Among the design challenges was separating the ten-meter wide driveway from the surrounding pristine gardens. Konieczny decided to sink the driveway underground and allow entry from under the building into the house through an inner atrium. This resulted in the atrial concept.
