Archicad, under the command of Graphisoft’s David Marlatt, AIA, smoked the competition and won CADENCE magazine’s annual «Top Gun» contest – a test of architectural acumen and CAD mastery held at A/E/C Systems Spring. Archicad won easily by enabling Marlatt to complete twice as much work as the other contestants in the time allotted.
Five finalists from a field of 280 qualified to compete for the «Top
Gun» by successfully answering a 25-question multiple choice exam. The 20-minute «Fastdraw» portion of the contest matched Archicad against AutoCAD R14 and Softdesk AutoArchitect 8.0 and required competitors to duplicate the floor plan of a two-story house with simple annotations
and elevations.
Displayed to judges and spectators in 3D view, the winning Archicad
model was by far the most complete showing both first and second stories well detailed with windows, doors and annotation. The 2D-only models
produced by the other programs showed partial or complete first floor elevations and little or no detail.
«David impressed the judges with his obvious command of architectural drafting, the speed and ease with which he completed both floor plans in the Fastdraw contest (the only finalist to do so) and the obvious familiarity he displayed with his architectural design software of
choice – Archicad,» comments CADENCE Editor in Chief Arnie Williams.
First prize was a $14,000 scanner donated by Intergraph.
The event was judged by Geoffrey Langdon, the originator of the 3D
Design Shootout in Boston, and Peter Sheerin, CADENCE technical editor.
