International Convention Centre
In November 2013, HDR|Rice Daubney of Australia and Obayashi Corporation of Japan won the award for Best Use of BIM for Design, Drama, and Excitement at the Build Sydney Live event.

International Convention Centre

The 48-hour event challenged participants from around the world to design a new International Convention Centre for Sydney as part of the specified 19 Hectare area of the Darling Harbour Live project. Run virtually using mobile technology from a sailboat in Darling Harbour during October 28 and 30, Build Sydney Live 2013 was the 5th edition of Build Live global collaborative Open BIM events. More than 40 countries were represented by 19 teams.

The success of their collaboration depended on their use of Open BIM and Graphisoft Archicad Teamwork through the BIM Server.

They used more than 10 types of software. In Sydney HDR|Rice Daubney used SketchUp, Solibri, Rhinoceros, dRofus, and in Tokyo Obayashi Corporation used FlowDesigner, CADWell Tfas, MIDAS, SS3, Tekla, and NavisWorks. Archicad with Teamwork was used as the authoring tool for the entire communication of all the software.

The brief included strict requirements for the design development and presentation materials.

“Open BIM helped us to efficiently understand each other’s workflow and to quickly set up the collaboration. As a preparation for the BSL event, HDR|Rice Daubney and Obayashi Corporation had web meetings to make sure we understand the workflow for this specific project, including what software we use and how we share the models. This preparation did not take too much time because it was the Open BIM workflow and because both companies had enough experience.”

Darren Tims, Principal, Director of Major Projects from HDR|Rice Daubney, described the workflow of Open BIM as being “without any issues or problems.” He added that the success of their company’s overseas collaboration – in this case, between Australia and Japan – was due to the fact that “both parties were very experienced with IFC.” “The ability to translate between different software packages is obviously a huge benefit in our ability to collaborate in BIM.”
