To coincide with egetæpper’s 75th year anniversary, kommadesign developed a showroom for the ege museum that tells the company’s story from the beginning in 1938 until today. kommadesign were responsible for the entire project – from the initial development of ideas for production/assembly to content production of graphics and videos. The assignment was solved – as is the case with all of kommadesign’s projects – with BIM. This has ensured that the process and implementation were carried out in close cooperation with egetæpper’s representatives. How does a company like kommadesign regard BIM generally and Archicad specifically as a working tool?
Owner Nicolai Aaboe works as concept developer at kommadesign, which he established in 2009. The company operates in a highly competitive business environment; focus on the assignments and quality control of the overall processes are crucial to the company’s workflow. “In this market, it is essential that we use our resources effectively and productively,” says Nicolai Aaboe, “and BIM-technology has a very positive effect on our work.”
In order to offer both their national and international customers the best solutions and highest quality at the right price, kommadesign have developed their own, four-phase model for their various assignments. Their method is divided into four phases. The first phase, The Idea, is where ideas are generated via internal workshops and creativity development meetings. Phase 2, Insight, includes a detailed mapping of the company, their clients and the market in which they operate. Idea development is the third phase and uses the information and the facts that were generated in the second phase as a starting point. In this phase, kommadesign takes advantage of BIM in order to develop sketches, 3D models and prototypes. By using BIM at the sketch level, kommadesign subsequently saves resources when they get to the fourth and final phase, Implementation, which is where ideas become reality.
“it is very easy to extract precise amounts and quickly provide your client with an economic estimate that is very close to reality.”
Smaller businesses sometimes have second thoughts about BIM technology. Nicolai Aaboe believes that this is a mistake. ”Archicad is extremely intuitive and simple to work with. It has nearly all the functions and features we need in order deliver the best solutions for our clients. It is a very efficient and fast program with a fully-developed module for visualization, and this way it covers our needs. Furthermore, one of the key advantages of BIM is that it uses intelligent objects already in the sketching phase. Thanks to the intelligent objects, there is much less after-work, which saves us resources when we have to incorporate last minute changes and provide economic calculations. When you’ve decided on the overall framework for a given project, it is very easy to extract precise amounts and quickly provide your client with an economic estimate that is very close to reality.”
The economic investment of shifting to Archicad is quickly recovered. Archicad saves many man hours on a given project, so even for smaller businesses Archicad offers a good return on the investment. Archicad also provides a unique opportunity to include clients as co-producers of the solutions kommadesign develops. Archicad is an efficient tool for creating innovative solutions – also within the retail industry. ”I must say that Archicad is a very strong program and that there are many benefits to gain by moving to BIM 100%, for larger as well as for smaller business,” Nicolai Aaboe concludes.
